Basic Information:
  • FIRST Robotics, which stands for: For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology, is a global non-profit organization that runs a series of hands-on, mentor-based robotics competitions for students from kindergarten through high school. Its mission is to inspire young people to become science and technology leaders by building science and engineering skills through exciting, team-based challenges. The competitions are often referred to as a "varsity sport for the mind," as they combine the excitement of a sporting event with the rigor of STEM learning.

    Key aspects of FIRST Robotics
      • "More than robots":
While the competitions involve building and programming robots, the organization emphasizes that the primary goal is to build students' skills and confidence.

    • A suite of programs:
FIRST offers a range of programs for different age groups, including FIRST LEGO League (FLL), FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC), and the FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) for high schoolers.

    • Teamwork and mentorship:
Students work in teams, often with guidance from adult mentors who are professionals in STEM fields. This structure fosters collaboration, problem-solving, and communication skills.

    • Real-world skills:
Participants gain experience in areas like fundraising, marketing, and team identity, in addition to the technical skills required to build and program a robot.

    • Coopetition:
FIRST promotes a culture called "coopetition," where students fiercely compete against each other but also help one another in the spirit of collaboration.

    • Founder:
The organization was founded in 1989 by inventor Dean Kamen, who is also known for inventions like the Segway.
